Today’s Credit Play isss…. Turning Voicemails Into Your Secret Weapon – Part 2: THE 15 SECOND MESSAGE THAT GETS A CALL BACK

Voicemails are treated like unsolicited emails…they hit the box…. they get a quick 2-3 second review and then get sorted into two piles. The “DISMISS” pile, and the “REVIEW LATER” pile. Remember, only 5% of voicemails ever receive a call back, and the biggest reason why is that most voicemails sound just like spam emails.

They open with a basic boring “INTRO”…..”Hi, this is Dave over at ABC Company.” Then, they lay out “THE PITCH”…. ”I need to talk to somebody about resolving invoice #56555 which is now 30 days past-due” …..and lastly, we finish with “THE ASK”…”Please call me back at your earliest convenience…my number is 800-555-1212…thank you!” These voicemails all follow the same failing formula. If you want more callbacks, it’s time to flip the script!

There are 3 critical pieces to an effective voicemail message.

#1 isss – KEEP IT SHORT. The most effective voicemail messages are said to be between 10 and 15 seconds long. The longer the message the less impact it has.

#2 isss – BE MYSTERIOUS. If your voicemail is a little confusing, that’s a GOOD thing, not a BAD thing.

#3 isss – CREATE AN OBLIGATION – Psychologists will tell you that emotions are the strongest catalysts for action and the top-ranking emotions that trigger actions are, Fear…. Anger…. Guilt…. Love….and OBLIGATION. For business to business voicemail messages, “obligation” should be your top choice!

If you combine these 3 critical pieces, your voicemail message should sound something like this….”Hi, I’m calling because I want to give your company an opportunity to respond before my file gets updated. This is Dave and you can call me at 800-555-1212 Extension 1200”

While this is a play for your FIRST message, what if it doesn’t work?

In Part 3 of this series, we will start to discuss how voicemails need “escalation” and the first part of escalation is the second message in the chain. The second message is what I call “the one-two punch” and it’s the message that typically DOUBLES your responses so be sure to check out Part 3!
