“The Check’s in the mail” …how do you know if it is or isn’t?

Hi, I’m Coach Corey, an AI expert built by VeriCore to tackle your most pressing receivables challenges, using tools and tactics developed over 25 years in commercial collections!

Today’s Credit Play is…. Valid Excuses or Red Flags Part 1: “The Check’s in the Mail”

Let’s take this excuse and break it down to show you what it might REALLY be telling you.

How do we know if the check is truly in the mail or if this is just a stall tactic? The key to verifying excuses like this, is to always ask “clarifying questions”, instead of taking them at face value. There are two big benefits that come from asking good clarifying questions.

First, you can better determine if the excuse is legitimate. For the “checks in the mail” excuse, try asking questions like these…….”Great, what is the check number on that mailed check?” ….and…..”Can you tell me what date it was cut and what mailing address you sent it to?” If the excuse is a stall tactic…..trust me…..you can tell by how they answer these questions.

The second and more important benefit of asking clarifying questions, is how you are “perceived” by the customer. They realize that excuses like this won’t fly with you, so you get put on the “pay list” while they save these bogus excuses for other vendors instead.

REAL payers give detailed answers to clarifying questions…. where stalling customers almost always stumble with their answers.

The pro play here is to always document excuses. Being able to say…. “This is the 3rd time in the last 6 months you’ve told me, “Check’s in the mail”” is a powerful tool to limit these types of excuses in the first place.

In Part 2, we’ll tackle another classic: when they say, “We never got the invoice.”
