Most disputes are diversionary stall tactics and it’s your job to sift through the clues to spot the fake. If your customer has a dispute, grab your detective gear and get to work!

Fake disputes always contain TWO big clues.

Clue #1 is in the details…. if a dispute is vague that’s a BIG clue. Clue #2 is in the timing……if you don’t hear about a dispute until you’re making your past-due collection calls, that’s an even BIGGER clue! For example, if your customer says, “My owner told me not to pay yet because he has issues with the order “, It’s time to play detective, and ask some questions!

REAL disputes have substance and are almost always paired with an offer of compromise. If your customer says, “Line item 7 on invoice # 5-7833, shows 100 units but we only received 85” this almost always passes the lie detector test. Then, if they pair that with an offer, like “If you can give us a credit for the 15 units, I will issue a check today”, 99% of the time….THIS is a “legitimate” dispute.
