Most people fit easily into one of the 4 different personality types…but on occasion, certain people will throw you for a loop. These personality types are called HYBRIDS, as they often morph their personality depending on the circumstance. Have you ever heard the phrase….. “A wolf in sheep’s clothing?”
There are TWO main kinds of HYBRIDs that you will encounter!
First, is the SITUATIONAL HYBRID….. This person shifts their personality based on context! Some leaders will display a DRIVER personality when making decisions in a board meeting……but then…. When inspiring and motivating a group of employees, they will easily shift into a dynamic and outgoing EXPRESSIVE! Another example is a CFO who’s a reserved and methodical ANALYTIC …. but then… shifts to a warm and supportive AMIABLE because he cares about making everyone comfortable!
Second, is the BLENDED PERSONALITY….. This is someone who is “hard-wired” with traits from 2 or more of the 4 personality types. For example, a “DRIVER-ANALYTIC” is one who thrives on getting to the bottom line… but also…demands the data to back it up!
So how do you spot a HYBRID? Start by identifying their DOMINANT trait!
Are they mostly fast paced and direct…even if they want lots of details? If so, you should talk to them as if were a DRIVER!
Are they agreeable… steady…and ethical, but at the same time EXTREMELY outgoing? If so, you should talk to them as if they were an EXPRESSIVE!
The key is to ALWAYS – STAY – FLEXIBLE and shift your approach AS they shift their personality type! Mastering personality types means better communication, stronger relationships, and less friction in EVERY area of life!
